11. How do you select the right technician and/or machine?

There are several considerations that need to be applied when answering this question. When microdermabrasion treatments are used properly, the actual brand of machine used makes very little difference from a consumer's vantage point. On the market today, there are two different levels of machines and most manufacturers produce two different levels for each. One type is marketed to physicians (medical microdermabrasion) and one type (the less powerful ones) are marketed towards aestheticians. (used in spas or salons)

  • Is the technician performing the procedure adequately trained?

If your treatment requirements are more stringent, then you might be a more suitable candidate for medical microdermabrasion performed in by a dermatolgist or other specifically trained medical professional.

  • Is the microdermabrasion unit being used in a manner that is sanitary?

Microdermabrasion crystals should NEVER be re-used. Not only is this unsanitary--just asking for cross contamination between clients and passing contagious diseases, but once they've been blown over the skin, they are smoother--the much-needed jagged edges are now dull and treatment is no longer as effective.

  • Are the skincare improvements desired realistic?

Microdermabrasion treatments are great for skin rejuvenation, to reduce fine lines or wrinkles, to eliminate unwanted superficial pigmentation, result in the reduction of some faint to moderate stretch marks and superficial scarring. Microdermabrasion is not the solution for heavily damaged skin. It is a non-invasive alternative for those who do not require more serious treatments such as laser treatments or chemical peels.
